New Portuguese standard for assessing the acoustic performance of residential buildings
The NP 4601:2026 has recently been published, a Portuguese standard dedicated to the classification of the acoustic quality of residential buildings.
This standard introduces an assessment methodology based on acoustic performance indicators associated with the different elements and systems of the building, enabling the classification of the acoustic quality of dwellings.

Methodology for classifying acoustic quality
NP 4601:2026 defines a set of indicators that allow the acoustic performance of residential buildings to be assessed in a structured and comparable way.
This approach enables a more consistent characterisation of acoustic quality, based on the acoustic behaviour of building components, through a performance classification expressed on an A to F scale, in a logic similar to the Energy Performance Certification system for buildings.
Scope of application of NP 4601:2026
The standard applies to new buildings, existing buildings and refurbishment interventions, allowing a comprehensive assessment of the acoustic performance of the built environment.
This framework contributes to a broader understanding of acoustic quality in residential contexts, distinguishing between buildings in terms of the acoustic comfort they provide to occupants.
Regulatory structure and technical annexes
NP 4601:2026 includes normative and informative annexes that complement the methodology for assessing the acoustic quality of residential buildings.
These annexes cover aspects related to the external environment as well as the overall characteristics of the building, reinforcing the global framework of the classification process.
Transparency and support for decision-making in the construction sector
This technical framework provides a reference for public authorities and various stakeholders in the construction sector, promoting a structured approach to assessing the acoustic quality of residential buildings.
It also supports more informed decision-making by users and property owners by providing a method for evaluating acoustic quality in this type of building.
In this context, the standard also serves as a tool for enhancing the value of the built environment, promoting transparency and strengthening trust between the different stakeholders in the sector.
